Unity
was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, who lived in Kansas
City. Both Charles and Myrtle were experiencing physical challenges
at the time they discovered the spiritual principles that healed them.
Others inquired about these principles and applied them in their lives.
They, too were helped. A small prayer group meeting at the Fillmore’s
home was the beginning of the movement, which now circles the globe
with over 600 churches and centers.
The
Fillmore’s believed that God is present in every person, and through
prayer and meditation, one can know God and receive guidance. They believed
that, as children of a loving God, all are heirs to God’s kingdom
of health, abundance, prosperity, and happy joy-filled lives.
"Unity
is a link in the great educational movement inaugurated by Jesus
Christ; our objective is to discern the Truth in Christianity
and prove it. The Truth that we teach is not new, neither do we
claim special revelations or discovery of new religious principles.
Our purpose is to help and teach humankind to use and prove the
eternal Truth taught by the Master."
